Durga Puja

Every October, the rhythm of India changes. Streets turn into galleries, idols rise from straw and clay, and the collective heartbeat of devotion fills the air. Durga Puja is not just a festival—it is an art form in itself. It transforms the act of worship into a celebration of aesthetics, community, and the feminine divine.

In our community, just like others across India’s most vibrant urban corners and quiet neighbourhoods, folks worked for months to shape many celebrations of Durga. Each activity, each gesture and offering to the goddess, carrying within it the essence of Shakti—the boundless energy that creates, sustains, and dissolves.

This spirit of creative power continues to inspire me to make contemporary Indian art, to see in Durga not only mythology, but metaphor: the resilience of the feminine force, and the balance of strength with compassion.

Reimagining Durga: Collage as Creation

My recent collage series—Durga 2025—is a reflection on this energy. The first piece captures the goddess in motion: astride her tiger, bow drawn, confronting Mahishasura, the embodiment of ignorance and ego. Layers of textured paper build up her form—the red of courage, the gold of divinity, the deep greens and blues of an earth she protects.

The second collage brings us closer—to Durga. Capturing her face, luminous with purpose. The fragments of paper converge into an expression that is both calm and fierce. Her trident glows with quiet assertion.

I contemplated on how collage mirrors the very philosophy of Durga: fragments of existence coming together into harmony. Creation itself, after all, is an act of assembling—the divine within the ordinary.

Ritual to Contemporary Expression

Durga Puja reminds us that art is communal. The clay idols born from riverbeds, people coming together to create new activities – return to the same waters after the festival, symbolizing the eternal cycle of birth and dissolution. Similarly, contemporary art in India today is rediscovering how ritual and modernity can coexist—how the sacred can find voice through new materials, new languages, and personal reinterpretations.

Through these collages, I seek to carry forward that lineage. The goddess is not distant; she lives within each act of creativity, each assertion of identity, each choice to rebuild the self.
